How to Make a Healing Tallow Balm for Radiation Skin (Simple, Natural Recipe)

How to Make a Healing Tallow Balm for Radiation Skin (Simple, Natural Recipe)

There are moments in life you don’t prepare for.

Moments where everything slows down, and what matters most becomes incredibly clear. Caring for the people you love. Showing up in the small ways. Finding comfort in the middle of something hard.

Recently, our family stepped into one of those seasons.

A close family relative began radiation treatment, and one of the side effects was something many people don’t talk about enough. Dry, irritated, sensitive skin that can feel almost burned.

And in that moment, none of our existing products felt quite right.

So instead of reaching for something already made, I went back to the basics.

I made something specifically for them.

Because that’s the beauty of natural skincare. It allows us to slow down, be intentional, and create something deeply nourishing for the exact season someone is in.

Why Tallow for Compromised Skin

Tallow has been used for generations because of how closely it mimics our skin’s natural oils.

For skin that is
Dry
Sensitive
Irritated
Compromised

Tallow helps
Restore moisture
Support the skin barrier
Soothe without overwhelming

When skin is going through something like radiation, simplicity matters. Gentle, nourishing ingredients matter.

The Power of Herbal Infusion

For this balm, I wanted more than just moisture. I wanted comfort and support.

So the tallow was slowly infused with herbs known for their calming and restorative properties.

Calendula is traditionally used to soothe and support healing skin
Chamomile is calming and ideal for sensitive skin
Lavender helps reduce irritation and supports recovery
Rosehip is rich in nutrients that support skin renewal
Marshmallow root is deeply soothing and helps soften dry, inflamed skin

This is not about adding more ingredients.
It is about choosing the right ones with purpose.

 The Exact Recipe

If you or someone you love is walking through a similar season, here is the exact balm I made.

Ingredients
1 lb grass fed tallow
4.48 oz organic golden jojoba oil
1.2 oz cold pressed castor oil
3 tbsp organic calendula
3 tbsp organic chamomile
3 tbsp organic lavender
3 tbsp organic rosehip
3 tbsp organic marshmallow root

Instructions

Add tallow, oils, and herbs into a double boiler or slow cooker
Heat on low for 6 hours, allowing the herbs to slowly infuse
Stir occasionally and keep heat gentle, do not overheat
Strain out herbs using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer
Pour into clean glass jars
Allow to fully cool and set

 How to Use

Apply a small amount to clean skin as needed.

This balm is designed to
Comfort dry, irritated skin
Support the skin barrier
Provide gentle, nourishing moisture

 A Final Thought

We don’t always get to choose the seasons we walk through.

But we do get to choose how we care for ourselves and the people we love in the middle of them.

Sometimes that looks like slowing down.
Sometimes that looks like going back to simple ingredients.
Sometimes that looks like making something by hand for someone who needs it.

This balm was created for a close family relative.
But my hope is that it helps someone else too.

Because skincare is not just about looking good.

It is about caring well.
At every stage of life, even the ones we were not ready for.

🤍 Walking Through a Similar Season?

We see you.

If you are not ready to make your own, we create small batch tallow balms with the same level of care and intention, designed to support dry and sensitive skin.

⚠️ Gentle Note

This balm is not intended to treat or cure medical conditions. Always consult with your healthcare provider during medical treatments like radiation.
